About
Lisa Elliott Schumacher
LPC, CPCS, M.Div.
Hi, and welcome to Life By Design! I want to encourage you that in just being here reading about my services, you have taken an important first step towards your healing. Whether you end up booking with me or another counselor, or even if you choose an alternate path to therapy, you have stepped your foot in an intentional direction of healing. I want to say I am proud of you for it!
Because I understand the power of the therapeutic relationship and I believe in bringing my whole self into the room, with appropriate boundaries, I want to share with you little bit about my training and education, a little bit about myself as a human, and a little about my journey as an LPC up to this point. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor (CPCS), a seminary graduate, and a member of the Licensed Professional Counselors Association (LPCA). In addition to my academic training, I continue to learn all that I can about the areas in which I specialize, and I continue to learn from life, as well as my time in the therapy room with my amazing clients.

My Educational Background
Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, Wesleyan College, 1999.
Master of Arts degree in Professional Counseling, Liberty University, 2012.
Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), since 2015
Master of Divinity (M.Div.) with a concentration in Chaplaincy, Liberty University, 2016.
Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor (CPCS), since 2018
Member of the Licensed Professional Counselors Association (LPCA)
My Integrationist Approach
In my academic training, in addition to all of the required clinical coursework, I was also trained on how to incorporate psychology and theology, a practice which allows clients who desire it and may benefit from it, to have the opportunity to experience the best of both worlds, the clinical and the spiritual. Early in my career, I began by working in an acute healthcare setting where I was able to put into practice these skills of spiritual integration for the patients who desired that approach. Many times, these patients were walking through some of the darkest and most uncertain times of their lives, and the incorporation of spirituality was of great comfort and reassurance to them. I was also able to meet all patients right where they were at, in the moment. For some patients, incorporating spirituality was not desired nor helpful, and we worked together from a strictly clinical approach, tailoring the counseling to best meet their needs and to help them to find mental and emotional healing as their bodies were also going through a healing process.

My Lived Experience in Healthcare Settings and My Heart for Healthcare Workers
I have also had the opportunity to bear witness to the impact of working in healthcare. The vicarious trauma that healthcare workers experience takes a toll, as does the full-time job of caring for others in less than ideal circumstances, all while juggling the demands of their own personal burdens and struggles. Bearing witness to this sacrifice has implanted a passion in my heart to support those who operate with healing hands in the healthcare industry.

My Holistic Approach to Mental Wellness: Bio/Psycho/Social/Spiritual
During my time in the healthcare setting, I have seen the intricate and inseparable interplay between mind, body, spirit, and community. Bodies heal better when minds and hearts are attended to, and pain and uncertainty are tolerated much more effectively when community support is present. I learned that an integrated approach includes, not only incorporating spirituality when desired, but it also means attending to physical wellness. We humans are a whole system, and when one part of that system is sick or hurting, another part will experience the pain as well. Therefore, I am passionate about helping you unearth your best self: physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.

Me As a Human
In addition to my professional identity, I am also a wife, mother of four grown children, and a bonus mom of four more, as well as a grandmother to four (soon to be five) beautiful grandchildren. I feel blessed and honored to be navigating the intricate beauty of a blended family, and I enjoy helping clients in this area as well.
Outside of the therapy room, I love travel, books, hot tea, interior design, outdoors (when it’s not too hot!), light gardening, board games, music of many, many kinds, movies, gym time (my iron therapy), and time with family and friends.
